After 3/4 of a semester of contemplating, I finally decided on a topic for a presentation I am giving in class. The range of choices I had was extremely broad: 2 demonstrations this semester, one a food demo, the other called an "illustrated talk"... aka show or tell about anything you want, as if you were teaching it in a highschool classroom.
So, okay. I like interior design. Still too broad. I like clothes. Even moreso broad. Food. Already did that. I like books and learning how to better my life. Still, nothing. Boggling my brian for ideas to narrow down, my best idea (which I wont even mention) for a topic was not seeming to quite click. Then... I watched HGTV.
Yes, I hate to admit it, but a television show was actually inspiring. Have you ever heard of the home giveaways they do on HGTV? Well, wait, lets back up. Have you ever even watched HGTV? It stands for Home and Garden Television. And, it's not just that, it's amazing. I highly recommend watching it in whatever so-called spare time anyone has these days. Back to the home giveaway. This year the home they are giving away is on the east coast in a beautiful area and is called the "Green Home". Yes, it's green in color. But recent times have shown that the word green is not only an adjective but also a verb. "Go Green" is a phrase you might have heard, meaning many different ways to do the following:
1. Save money

2. Save time
3. Save energy
4. Save the environment
5. Recycle
The list goes on. Think of becoming green as becoming superman/woman, saving one dollar/minute/watt/tree at a time. If this concept already seems to liberal for you, don't stop reading just yet. Who doesn't want to save money? And even just doing simple things while sprucing up your home like buying from thrift stores and reclaiming items that would otherwise be filling our landfills, is being green!! It's easy, and you don't have to go green all at once, just start a shade at a time.
My favorite two examples of doing something "green" that they implimented into the Green Home were having a place to take off and store your shoes when you walk into your home. This creates less toxins entering your house, creating a healthier environment. The second example was having open storage in the kitchen, such as having shelves with glass containers filled with ingredients to save time that would otherwise be spent looking for them in a cupboard.
Now, back to picking my topic for class. Even though this topic is so new to me, I am excited to learn more about it and start slowly implimenting it into my lifestyle. Now I get to teach my class of 20+ Home Ec. majors (all girls) that Green is the new Pink. Who woulda thunk?
