To My Friend, Derek:

My dearest little cute Derek face,

You make me laugh all the time. And your laugh makes me laugh. And when I laugh, you laugh harder. I think you are so funny. On Saturday, you told me you thought I was funny too, and I knew you meant it, and I felt happy.

Yesterday you told me how you loved fairy tales. You said, "Fairy tales are so good! Always how it should end, the good always prevail!" You are a fairy tale - your good prevails.

One time we sang Bohemian Rhapsody in the car acapella. Another time you spilt our food at the Malt Shop and told me that it was because someone shoved you, so you made me give you a hug... But later you said, "Hayley, there is something I have to tell you. Nobody shoved me. I just dropped it on accident and was too embarrassed to tell you." I thought it was cute. And I will never forget the times I watched you play music. You thought you didn't do good, but I was proud of you.

It was like you knew it was coming.

When I heard, I couldn't believe. I wanted it to be a lie, just like the spilt food at the Malt Shop. But it wasn't.

And you left with a smile. And a laugh, the one I really like. That is how I know you: Derek with a smile and a laugh. And that is what makes me hurt a little less.

Hayley, I am so sorry. It is so hard to lose a good friend, especially so unexpectedly. Just know that I love you and Heavenly Father loves you and so does Derek, and his smile will be looking at you all the time now!

Once I was at a Lone Peak soccer game and Derek sat behind me. Neither of us knew the other, I knew his name 'cause that's just sort of my gig. But anyway, he had a small white kitten there with him and ever since then I wanted a cat because he's the first person I ever saw who really looked like he enjoyed cats.

I'm really sorry for your loss.
